Dipesh Dey

Dipesh is a doctoral student in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at University of South Florida, working with Dr. Jeffrey A. Cunningham. He did his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 2002 and Master’s in Technology in Environmental Engineering & Management from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, in 2005.

Dipesh’s Ph.D. research objectives are to look into the sorption-related fate processes, specifically the competition for sorption sites amongst trace organic contaminants (PhACs and/or EDCs) in a selected soil and a selected river sediment. All contaminants chosen are present in treated effluent or reclaimed water. This "competitive sorption" covers the first two phases of his research. In the third phase, he recognizes reclaimed water/treated effluent to be a mixture of all the trace organic contaminants and a complex DOC matrix (EFOM). The matrix may consist of humics, hydrophobic bases, neutrals and hydrophilic acids, bases etc. The composition of the DOC matrix is subject to the way of characterizing the matrix as well. The objective of the third phase is to investigate into how the complex DOC matrix affects the sorption of those contaminants onto/into soil/sediment particles, when the reclaimed water is discharged onto land (in case of water reuse by land irrigation or agriculture, Soil Aquifer Treatment or SAT) and/or into streams (in case of reuse by augmenting the stream-flow to solve draught problems, River Bank Filtration or RBF).

He can speak English, Bengali and Hindi. Apart from studies, he enjoys doing photography and star-gazing with his semi-giant binoculars.

At UNESCO-IHE, Dipesh will work with Dr. Gary Amy and his research team, on contaminant fate and transport during SAT and RBF processes.
