Wendy is a doctoral student in the Department of Global Health at University of South Florida, working with Dr. Ricardo Izurieta. She did her Bachelor of Science. in Environmental Engineering in 1995 and Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering (Civil Eng. minor) in 1997 from University of Florida. From 1998 to 1999, she served as Engineer I in St. John’s River Water Management District in Palatka, FL, working on Lake Apopka Restoration Project in Central Florida closely working with Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection (FDEP). From 2000-2003, she worked as Project Engineer in TASK Environmental Inc., Tampa, FL, preparing remedial action plans and contamination assessments for petroleum and pesticide contaminated sites in Florida. Currently, alongside doing her Ph.D. she also works as Professional Engineer, in Environmental Engineering Consultants, Tampa, FL. There she conducts Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments for commercial real estate including former gasoline stations, agricultural land, chemical manufacturing facilities etc.; prepares emergency plans for oil spill prevention and designs septic systems.
Her Ph.D. research objectives are to incorporate a global health perspective into wastewater treatment systems in the developing world. As part of the interdisciplinary project focused on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), she is evaluating a decentralized wastewater treatment system from an engineering, health and anthropological perspective.
At UNESCO-IHE, Wendy will work with Dr. Piet Lens and his research team, on anaerobic processes and bioreactors.
